1 in 10B

Last friday night, while husband and I were driving home, we ended up discussing about the 6/49 Superlotto. I told him, "I wonder how many possible combinations there will be from the 6/49 lotto." I was telling him that there is a finite number of combinations for this particular lottery. And I would like to know if it is possible to bet on all the combinations and still get a winning. Husband said if it is possible, then syndicates have thought of it and have done it already. He said it can't be done. Well, i told him it can't be, if the money you'll pay betting on all the combinations will be more than the jackpot amount.

So, to find out, I asked a college friend, who I know is very good in formulas. Several minutes after sending my email inquiry, I got his response, which I would like to share with you all.

Well, for super lotto 6/49 (meaning from numbers 1 to 49, one has to bet on a 6-digit combination), there are 10,068,347,520 possible combinations. That's 1-in-10-billion chance of winning!

Lotto winners must be really lucky, huh? :)
